1. The 2,784 ETFE Foil Cushion Facade
Engineered by world-acclaimed Swiss architectural practice Herzog & de Meuron, the Allianz Arena was the first stadium in history conceived with a 100% full-surface illuminated facade.
The exterior shell comprises 2,784 individual diamond-shaped cushions manufactured from ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) fluoropolymer film. Each cushion has a thickness of just 0.2 millimeters yet exhibits tensile strength capable of withstanding heavy alpine snow loads and gale-force wind shear.
Each cushion is continuously kept inflated under a slight positive air pressure of 350 Pascals by dedicated pneumatic pump stations located in the outer utility ring. Over 300,000 programmable LED luminaires illuminate the exterior in Bayern red, Germany white, or custom UEFA Euro sequences.
Thermodynamic & Shading Microclimate
The upper roof cushions feature custom-printed silk-screen dot matrices on the interior ETFE layers. This blocks 98% of harmful ultraviolet radiation while admitting 65% of natural photosynthetically active daylight required for pitch grass regeneration, reducing synthetic lighting costs by 40%.
2. Three-Tier Steep Acoustic Bowl Geometry
The interior bowl features three uninterrupted tiers configured to maintain intimate proximity between the spectator and the pitch touchline:
- Lower Tier: 24-degree gradient, capacity ~20,000 seats.
- Middle Tier: 30-degree gradient, housing 106 VIP executive skyboxes.
- Upper Tier: Steep 34-degree rake, elevating spectators over 45 meters above the turf with zero obstructed views.
By curving the seating bowl into an elliptical cylinder, sound waves reflected from the solid concrete undercrofts converge at the center circle, ensuring immense acoustic pressure for Bundesliga fixtures.
3. Transport Logistics & Europe's Largest Underground Garage
Constructed on the northern perimeter of Munich in Fröttmaning, the arena features Europe's largest stadium parking structure (Parkhaus) with four levels providing 9,800 dedicated vehicle spaces. A monumental 543-meter-long pedestrian esplanade bridges the U-Bahn line U6 directly to the main turnstile concourse, enabling 75,000 fans to evacuate safely in under 45 minutes.
